ITV Studios builds new drama troupe

A former BBC producer is one of two new appointments at UK prodco ITV Studios (ITVS) and the first to join Francis Hopkinson’s new drama unit.

Ben Evans has been appointed executive producer within Hopkinson’s scripted team at ITVS, while Catherine Oldfield has been named as development producer.

Hopkinson joined ITVS as its creative director of drama last month, leaving his role at Wallander producer Left Bank Pictures.

He is working alongside Kate Bartlett, its existing creative director for drama, to create a second drama unit responsible for developing and producing internal and external commissions.

Evans has been at the BBC for 10 years, most recently as executive producer of its in-house drama production department. His credits include The Curse of Steptoe, Fear of Fanny, Consuming Passion and Fantabulosa!

He also produced costume series Desperate Romantics and black comedy Money, and was previously a consultant script editor for Granada Comedy & Drama.

Oldfield joins ITVS from Monkey – the Made In Chelsea producer that BBC web series Henry 8.0, starring Brian Blessed, and stop-frame animation comedy A Right Royal Wedding.

She also previously worked as development producer for Greenlit Rights, where she was also script editor for ITV1’s Foyle’s War.

Earlier this week, ITVS announced Sarah Harris had joined the company as series editor for entertainment. Reporting to Richard Cowles, creative director of entertainment, she will work on jungle-based reality series I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and future commissions.

Harris has previously worked as a freelance for ITVS, serving as series editor for high stakes gameshow Red or Black?
