ITV opens door to latest Rankin drama

The UK’s ITV has commissioned an adaptation of Ian Rankin crime novel Doors Open, to be made by Stephen Fry’s Sprout Pictures and also starring The Hobbit actor.

Doors Open tells the story of a self-made millionaire, an art professor and a banker who come together to undertake an audacious art heist.

ITV is lining up a “fast-paced, warm and witty” two-hour drama set in Rankin’s hometown of Edinburgh, exploring the city’s corporate banking and fine art underbelly. The broadcaster has previously adapted 10 of Rankin’s Inspector Rebus novels.

Dougie Henshall (Collision, Primeval, The Silence) will play the millionaire. Fry (Kingdom, Bones, Sherlock Holmes, The Hobbit) will play the art professor. Filming begins in Edinburgh on April 23.

Doors Open has been adapted by James Mavor and Sandi Toksvig. Marc Evans (Collision, Hunky Dory) is directing, Jon Finn (Billy Elliot, My Little Eye) is producing and executive producers are Sprout Pictures’ MD Gina Carter, Fry and Toksvig. The creative producer is Pip Broughton and head of production is Zoe Rocha.

Fry said he believed the results would be “an entertaining, suspenseful art heist thriller that will appeal to audiences at home and abroad.”
