ITV lines up Sophie Turner jewel thief drama Joan for its new UK streamer ITVX

UK commercial broadcaster ITV has commissioned crime drama Joan to premiere on its new streaming service, ITVX.

Sophie Turner

Based on real events, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner will play Joan Hannington, a notorious jewel thief who operated in London during the 1980s.

To be filmed by London-based prodco Snowed-In Productions during spring 2023, the six-part drama will be directed by Richard Laxton (Mrs Wilson) and executive produced by Ruth Kenley-Letts and Jenny Van Der Lande. All3Media is handling international distribution.

“Joan’s story is incredible and a perfect fit for ITVX,” said Polly Hill, ITV’s head of drama. “She made a success of life when the stakes seemed stacked against her, by not playing by the rules.”

Adapted by screenwriter Anna Symon from Hannington’s autobiography, I Am What I Am, Joan tells the story of Hannington’s rise from petty offender to diamond thief and criminal mastermind – all while struggling to bring up her young daughter.

Free streaming service ITVX will launch in the UK on December 8, replacing ITV Hub, with over 10,000 hours of free programming. Joan will join other flagship ITVX shows such as spy drama Litvinenko and thriller Without Sin.
