ITV cracks murder mystery

UK broadcaster ITV1 has commissioned a three-part murder mystery about a group of former wartime code breakers who use their skills to solve a pair of suspicious deaths.

Set in 1951, The Bletchley Circle (3×60′) follows four women who worked at the top secret Bletchley Park communications centre during the Second World War.

Once the war is over, they return to their normal lives until they notice patterns in a pair of unresolved murders and try to help solve them.

The miniseries was created and written by Guy Burt (The Borgias). World Productions (United, Line of Duty) is producing, with Jake Lushington (The Devil’s Whore) producing. Simon Heath (Hancock and Joan) is exec producing.

“The Bletchley Circle is about what might have been,” said Lushington. “Despite the era they have come through, women like Susan and Millie have the capacity, the ideas and the ability to process evidence and crack a murder case. In many ways it is a form of police profiling that was way ahead of its time.”

The Bletchley Circle was commissioned by Laura Mackie, director of drama commissioning, and Sally Haynes, controller of drama commissioning, for ITV. Filming will begin at the end of this month.

Other recent drama commissions from the commercial broadcaster include Doors Open, an adaptation of the Ian Rankin crime novel, and Thirteen Steps Down, a two-part psychological thriller.
