Eagle Eye Drama, Beta Film check back in to Hotel Portofino

Eagle Eye Drama’s Hotel Portofino is set in Italy during the rise of Fascism

MIPTV: Eagle Eye Drama, the prodco set up by the team behind international drama brand Walter Presents, is working on the second season of Italy-set period drama Hotel Portofino with Germany’s Beta Film, which announced the news on the first day of MipTV.

The series stars Natascha McElhone as the daughter of a wealthy industrialist who moves to Italy in the 1920s to set up a quintessentially British hotel in the beautiful town of Portofino.

The show was created and is written by former Channel 4 communications director Matt Baker for ITV and BritBox in the UK.

The first season has been sold by Beta into 55 territories, to broadcasters including Sky Italia, Foxtel in Australia and PBS in the US, where it is due to launch in June.

Joining Baker in returning for season two is director Adam Wimpenny (Blackwood), with Walter Presents and Eagle Eye Drama execs Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino overseeing the six episodes as executive producers.

The series is produced in cooperation with the Beta Film Group while production services are provided by Drugiplan.

Jo McGrath, chief creative officer at Eagle Eye Drama, said the second season of Hotel Portofino will feature another “heady mix of romance, intrigue, and dangerous ambitions.”

The news comes as another Eagle Eye and Beta production, Professor T, is in production on its second season in Cambridge and Belgium, with Ben Miller starring as the eponymous criminologist.

Beta has sold the crime drama to more than 100 territories worldwide, most recently to Brazil (Globo TV), South Korea (BBC Studios), Switzerland (CH Media TV) and Iceland (Syn).
