The 8×45’ series is the inaugural production from Intaglio, the Berlin-based drama joint venture between Beta Film and ZDF Enterprises launched in February. The series is for German pubcaster ZDF and will begin production in 2019.

The Swarm, which will be shot in English, follows an international group of scientists and military personnel who come together after the discovery of intelligent non-human species at the bottom of the North Sea.

Intaglio’s head and creative director Frank Doelger will executive produce with ndF’s MD Eric Welbers and Schaetzing. The series is made in partnership with rights-holding company Swarm Production, run by Till Groenemeyer and owned by Athos, and Schaetzing’s publishing house Kiepenheuer & Witsch.

“The time is now for The Swarm as an international high-end series,” said Frank Zervos, ZDF senior VP of films and series. “The themes of the novel are more relevant than ever in light of the environmental challenges the world is facing today. Also, the format of a TV series offers the narrative and technical tools one would need to make and finance a huge project like The Swarm.”
