IMDb launches free streamer

Amazon-owned online film and television information database IMDb has launched a free, advertising-supported streaming service in the US.

IMDb Freedive is a streaming channel available via the IMDb website and on all Amazon Fire TV devices, providing access to shows such as Fringe, Heroes and The Bachelor plus movies including Foxcatcher, Memento and The Illusionist, without subscription.

Additionally, the company is extending its video offering with shortform original series, celebrity interviews and trailers.

IMDb Freedive users will be able to gain deeper insight into the content via IMDb’s X-Ray service, which gives in-depth information about a given show or film. The service launched on January 10 and is accessible for viewers in the US.

“Customers already rely on IMDb to discover movies and TV shows and decide what to watch,” said Col Needham, IMDb founder and CEO. “With the launch of IMDb Freedive, they can now also watch full-length movies and TV shows for free. We will continue to enhance IMDb Freedive based on customer feedback and will soon make it available more widely, including on IMDb’s leading mobile apps.”
