IDTV’s Nillesen and Hoogendoorn track The Traitors’ journey to TV hit

All3Media-owned Dutch firm IDTV is the prodco behind hit competition format The Traitors, which has proven a winner for local broadcaster RTL4 and others around the world, with adaptations for the likes of the BBC, Peacock in the US, Max in Spain and Network Ten in Australia.

Far from an overnight success, the format was nurtured over a number of years, being developed alongside other IDTV shows including its popular version of Belgian adventure reality gameshow The Mole.

Michel Nillesen and Jasper Hoogendoorn, IDTV MD and creative director respectively, spoke with Clive Whittingham about how The Traitors made it to screen, the reasons for its appeal, the broader trends they see shaping the unscripted sector right now, and what’s next for the company.
