Hulu takes Umbre

Hulu has picked up HBO Europe’s Romanian crime drama Umbre for streaming in the US.

The firm will launch the 8×45’ series on its free, ad-supported online video service, a move that is believed to make Umbre the first HBO Europe show to come to the States.

Umbre HBO’s third series produced entirely in Romania, is produced by Bucharest-based Multi Media Est and made its debut on HBO Romania in early 2015. Distribution is handled by Synergetic Distribution.

The show is based on Small Time Gangster, produced by Sydney-based prodco Boilermaker Burberry and is distributed by UK-based DRG.

The story follows a taxi driver who doubles as a collector for a major local mobster and whose life is threatened when he accidentally kills someone.

Last week, C21 reported that Hulu had linked up with UK commercial broadcaster ITV on Harlots, an eight-part drama set in an 18th century brothel.
