Hulu orders series adaptation of Alexis Schaitkin’s debut novel Saint X

Disney-owned Hulu has greenlit an adaptation of Alexis Schaitkin’s debut novel Saint X from ABC Signature.

Hulu has given an eight-episode order to the adaptation, which explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Hulu said the psychological drama, told in multiple timelines and perspectives, promises to upend the girl-gone-missing genre.

Writer Leila Gerstein will executive-produce alongside Schaitkin, director Dee Rees, Stephen Williams, Anonymous Content and DreamCrew Entertainment.

It joins Hulu’s growing slate of book-to-screen adaptations, including The Handmaid’s Tale, Shrill, Little Fires Everywhere, Normal People, Nine Perfect Strangers and upcoming series Conversations with Friends.

In related news, US reports have confirmed comedy series Maggie will launch on Hulu rather than on fellow Disney-owned broadcast network ABC, which originally ordered the single-camera show.

Based on the short film of the same name by Tim Curcio, Maggie follows a young woman, played by Rebecca Rittenhouse, trying to cope with life as a psychic. Justin Adler and Maggie Mull write and executive-produce alongside Evan Hayes and Jeff Morton, and the series is produced by 20th Television.
