HitPlay documentary Last of the Right Whales surfaces at Off The Fence

Last of the Right Whales is set for a theatrical release this autumn

Off The Fence, the European producer and distributor behind Oscar-winning documentary My Octopus Teacher, has secured sales rights in certain territories to nature doc Last of the Right Whales.

Made by Canada’s HitPlay Productions, the film tells the story of the fight to save the North Atlantic right whale, one of the most endangered whale species in the world. HitPlay’s founder Nadine Pequeneza directs.

Off The Fence holds sales rights outside North America, although HitPlay has broadcast deals with pubcasters SWR and Arte in Germany and France respectively, and with Canada’s CBC. The latter plans to air the doc in 2022 after its theatrical release this autumn.

Loren Baxter, head of acquisitions at Off the Fence, said: “Last of the Right Whales is an important story of hope, impact and action, all of which plays into Off the Fence’s strengths as a distributor. Nadine and her team at HitPlay Productions have incredible access and use stunning visuals of these great whales to reinforce why it’s so important we save these animals who are on the brink of extinction. We’re very excited to be working with such a talented team and look forward to bringing this project to our international clients.”

Joanne Jackson is executive producing alongside Pequeneza, while Sholeh Fabbri is impact producer. The film will be distributed in Canada by IndieCan Entertainment.
