Historian David Olusoga launches prodco Hillgate Films with BBC Studios backing

British historian and broadcaster David Olusoga is launching a factual-focused production company with backing from BBC Studios.

Hillgate Films will focus on developing and producing history-focused documentaries, formats and series, both with and without Olusoga as on-screen talent.

Hillgate launches with support from BBC Studios in the form of a development deal and first look at distribution rights. This support will help to build on the longstanding partnership between David and the commercial arm of the UK public broadcaster.

Olusoga, known for his work on the BBC’s A House Through Time and its recent landmark series Union, will both executive produce and present series for Hillgate.

The new venture will operate as a coproducer rather than standalone producer, allowing Olusoga to focus on fewer, more ambitious projects. The company already has its first two projects in production.

By working as a coproducer, Hillgate says it can collaborate with a range of established partners on larger-scale projects while giving Olusoga the creative freedom to concentrate on the content itself, rather than the day-to-day management of a production company.

Ben Hall, previously global director of programmes at Motion Content Group, has been hired as the company’s MD. He previously worked as creative director at iZen TV, MD of Chalkboard TV and head of formats at Shine Group.
