HBO picks Movistar Plus Original La Mesías, Turkish drama Golden Boy for Lat Am

Movistar Plus Original series La Mesías

MIPCOM: Warner Bros Discovery (WBD)-owned HBO in Latin America has picked up Spanish series La Mesías for its platform across the region through a deal with distributor Movistar Plus International.

A Movistar Plus Original series in collaboration with Suma Content, the seven-part series is written, directed and produced by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, their first screen project in three years after titles such as La Llamada, Paquita Salas and Veneno.

La Mesías blends genres from thriller to musical to tell a story that spans from 1980s to 2013. It introduces Enric, whose childhood was marked by his parents’ neglect, their religious fanaticism and his mother’s messianic delusions. When a pop music video from a group of Christian sisters goes viral, memories start to fill his head.

The deal was announced here in Cannes on day two of Mipcom where WBD has also acquired Turkish drama series Golden Boy for its HBO Max streaming service in Lat Am.

The series will premiere on the platform under the local titles El Chico de Oro (Spanish) and O Canto do Pássaro (Portuguese) during 2024 following the deal with the show’s distributor, Eccho Rights.

Produced by OGM Pictures for Star TV, Golden Boy is a classic family drama that tells the story of two sisters, Seyran and Suna, whose paths cross with golden boy Ferit. The two sisters’ lives change forever when Ferit decides to marry Seyran instead of Suna.
