HBO, Notaro get animated about stand-up

US premium cablenet HBO has reunited with comedian and actress Tig Notaro for what they claim will be the world’s first fully animated stand-up special.

The as-yet-untitled set will air on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max this summer, with Ellen DeGeneres on board as executive producer.

Notaro selected LA-based animation studio Six Point Harness, maker of the Oscar-winning short Hair Love, to produce the animation for the special.

It marks the third collaboration between Notaro and DeGeneres after the latter executive produced Notaro’s Netflix special Happy To Be Here in 2018 and Notaro co-directed DeGeneres’ Netflix special Relatable in the same year.

HBO previously worked with Notaro on the stand-up special Boyish Girl Interrupted in 2015.

Notaro currently appears in Star Trek: Discovery and appeared opposite Octavia Spencer in the Paramount Pictures comedy Instant Family. She also has a role in the upcoming Zack Snyder film Army of the Dead.

Notaro wrote and starred in One Mississippi on Amazon Prime Video and also hosts an advice podcast called Don’t Ask Tig, produced by American Public Media.

The special is written by Notaro, directed by Greg Franklin and executive produced by Notaro, Thomas Ouellette, Hunter Seidman, DeGeneres, Jeff Kleeman, Greg Franklin and Brendan Burch.

It is produced by Rachel Abarbanell, DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production and Notaro’s Zero Dollars & Zero Sense Productions for HBO.

“Tig is truly an original and this animated special solidifies her status as an artist who constantly transcends expectations,” said Nina Rosenstein, executive VP of HBO programming.

“Stand-up can be a very solitary art form, so combining it with a collaborative years-long creative effort was such a joyful experience. I’m so proud of this special and can’t wait for everyone to be fully vaccinated watching with their Nana,” added Notaro.
