HBO Max finds Possessions

Possessions was shot in French, Hebrew and English

WarnerMedia-owned US streamer HBO Max has picked up a French-Israeli psychological thriller from StudioCanal and a UK drama from Banijay Rights.

Possessions was created by Shachar Magen (Sirens) and directed by Thomas Vincent (Bodyguard) for French pay TV operator Canal+ and Israeli broadcaster Yes. It was filmed in Israel in French, Hebrew and English.

French indie Haut et Court TV (No Man’s Land, The Returned) produces with support from CNC and BeTV. StudioCanal handles international distribution and has sealed the deal with HBO Max, which will premiere the series in the US in December.

The 6×52’ drama focuses on a young French expatriate in Israel who is charged with the murder of her husband on their wedding night.

It is written by Shachar Magen (Sirens) in collaboration with Valérie Zenatti (A Bottle in the Gaza Sea) and stars Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Reda Kateb (Close Enemies, Django) and Dominique Valadié.

Beatriz Campos, senior VP of global sales and production financing for TV Series at StudioCanal, said: “The demand for non-English-language content continues to grow throughout the world and I am delighted that this exceptional drama will be available for a wide, global audience via HBO Max and its international Max Original brand.”

HBO Max has also acquired Adult Material (4×60′), which was produced by Banijay’s Fifty Fathoms for Channel 4 in the UK, where it is currently on air.

The drama, from Lucy Kirkwood (The Smoke), sees Hayley Squires (Collateral, The Miniaturist, I, Daniel Blake) play leading British pornstar Jolene Dollar as she juggles work and the reality of motherhood.

The series, which asks serious questions about sex in the age of the internet, the blurring of fantasy and reality, and economic choices for women, will debut on HBO Max in December.
