HBO Max, BBC Three get Starstruck by Rose Matafeo for a third time

Tom (Nikesh Patel) and Jessie (Rose Matafeo) in Starstruck

HBO Max and BBC Three have renewed Starstruck, the romantic comedy created by comedian and writer Rose Matafeo and produced by Avalon, for a third season.

Starstruck sees Matafeo play Jessie, a millennial living in East London juggling two dead-end jobs and navigating the complications of becoming romantically involved with a famous film star, Tom, played by Nikesh Patel.

The ensemble cast in the previous two seasons has included Minnie Driver and Russell Tovey, while the series is co-written by Matafeo, Alice Snedden and Nic Sampson, with Matafeo and Snedden also directing.

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said: “Rose has created a show that strikes just the right balance of heart and humour. Starstruck is exactly the kind of rom-com that we love at HBO Max, and we are so happy to see Jessie and Tom’s story continue.”

Gregor Sharp from the BBC comedy commissioning team, added: “Starstruck is a blast of fresh comedy air, perfectly capturing the emotional mayhem of a new relationship with sharp wit, dry humour and a truthful eye.”

The series is executive produced by Rob Aslett, Jon Thoday, Cath Gagon, Richard Allen-Turner, Matafeo and Sharp for the BBC. Toby Welch is series producer.
