HBO greenlights True Detective S3

US premium cablenet HBO has given the go-ahead for a third season of crime drama True Detective.

The latest run will centre on a grisly crime in the depths of the Ozarks and stars Mahershala Ali as detective Wayne Hays.

It is co-directed and written by creator Nic Pizzolatto, alongside co-director Jeremy Saulnier. Pizzolatto and Saulnier will exec produce with Scott Stephens, plus season one stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and original director Cary Joji Fukunaga.

An air date has yet to be announced but it is hoped that season three will be a return to form for the Anonymous Content-produced programme, after the second season failed to live up to the hype generated by its first run.
