HBO Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon to end with fourth season

Matt Smith in House of the Dragon

HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon will likely conclude with its fourth season, according to showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal.

Condal was speaking at a press conference yesterday, where he confirmed that season three of the series would begin production in early 2025.

Season two of House of the Dragon concluded in the US on Sunday, with the show having premiered back in 2022. A prequel to hit series Game of Thrones, it is based on the books from author George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire franchise.

Martin co-created House of the Dragon with Condal. The production companies are HBO Entertainment, Martin’s GRRM Productions, Condal’s Bastard Sword and 1:26 Pictures.

House of the Dragon is the first of multiple Game of Thrones spin-offs that have been discussed at HBO, although only one more, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been greenlit. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and streamer Max, recently discussed future Game of Thrones spin-offs, the industry’s reliance on IP and how Max’s local commissioning strategy is changing with C21.
