HBO aims for a slam-dunk with docuseries on NBA champions Boston Celtics

Celtics City follows the history and cultural impact of the NBA team

Warner Bros Discovery-owned US cablenet HBO has ordered sports documentary series Celtics City, which follows 18-time NBA basketball champions the Boston Celtics.

To be produced by HBO Sports Documentaries, Ringer Films and Words + Pictures, it chronicles the history, cultural impact and enduring success of the team.

Executive produced by Bill Simmons and Connor Schell (30 for 30) and directed by Lauren Stowell, the series includes exclusive archive footage and interviews with former Celtics players such as Larry Bird and Jaylen Brown. It will also be streamed on Max in 2025.

Simmons said: “The team’s connection to the city and almost a century of American history was the most compelling piece for us. This story is bigger than basketball, and yet, it’s everything you ever loved about basketball, too.”

Stowell said: “Making this documentary was an incredible opportunity to delve into generations of legendary personalities, defining struggles, and extraordinary triumphs that have left a lasting mark not only on the game of basketball, but on the city of Boston and the spirit of America.”
