ANNECY: Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe is developing an adult animated series inspired by visionary British producer Gerry Anderson’s unfilmed action-adventure series Hit Squad.

Described as an espionage action comedy from the world of Anderson, Hit Squad will be set in 1990s London and feature “next generation Supermarionation,” the style pioneered by Anderson and his wife Sylvia on hits such as Thunderbirds.

It will follow an international team of talented spies hellbent on putting death before dishonour as they battle the murky world of hidden foes and dangerous villains.

The series is being developed in partnership with Anderson Entertainment, led by Gerry’s son Jamie Anderson, who will serve as an executive producer on the project.

According to Anderson Entertainment, The Hit Squad was first developed in the 1980s but never filmed.

Made by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, Warner Bros Animation, Mr Morris Productions and Anderson Entertainment, it will be directed by Darren Walsh and produced by Russell McLean.

Based in London, Warner Bros Discovery-owned Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe makes series such as The Amazing World of Gumball, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe and Elliott from Earth.

Gerry Anderson was a visionary British creator, producer and director whose groundbreaking work is credited with redefining science fiction and family entertainment.

From Thunderbirds and Stingray to Captain Scarlet and Space: 1999, his inventive storytelling, pioneering special effects and iconic ‘Supermarionation’ technique were hugely influential from the 1960s onwards.

The Hit Squad news was announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market, which is currently taking place in France.
