Hadlow confirmed as BBC4 chief

The controller of BBC2 in the UK will take charge of sister factual channel BBC4 on a permanent basis as part of a management rejig at the public broadcaster.

Janice Hadlow will take on the newly created role of channel editor at BBC4 after BBC director of television Danny Cohen axed the position of controller. Cohen said he wanted to see further collaboration between the two networks with regards to programming.

Hadlow had been in temporary charge of BBC4 since the channel’s former controller Richard Klein left in May to join rival ITV as director of factual.

She will remain in her role as controller of BBC2 while a new channel editor will report to her to help maintain BBC4’s “distinctive” output.

Cohen, said: “I’m keen for BBC2 and BBC4 to collaborate more across their programmes, scheduling, marketing and digital innovation.

“Janice has made real progress in these areas and I want to build on these foundations. The new role of BBC4 channel editor, reporting to Janice, will help ensure that the channel continues to grow its own distinctive tone, character and output, as well as providing day-to-day management of the channel and its commissioning.”

In related news, BBC World News will now be offered in high definition when it launches on Arabsat in the Middle East. The channel will include news, entertainment, documentaries and arts programming.
