Global OTT revenues hit US$83bn

Global OTT revenues reached US$83bn in 2019, according to a new report from industry analysis firm Digital TV Research.

Worldwide income from OTT services – including SVoD, AVoD, rental, download to own (DTO) and electronic sell through (EST) – climbed from US$67bn in 2018 and have increased by US$50bn from 2017.

Of 2019’s US$16bn in additional OTT revenues on the previous year, SVoD platforms contributed US$12bn. Over the course of last year, SVoD revenues reached the US$48bn mark, with SVoD’s share of OTT revenues hitting 58%, up from 41% in 2015.

Meanwhile, AVoD revenues accounted for US$24bn in 2019.

From the 138 countries studied, the top five commanded 72% of global revenues last year. OTT revenues exceeded US$1bn in 13 countries in 2019.

Commenting on the report, Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “The US added US$8bn in revenues in 2019 – half of the global additions, with China up by US$1bn.”
