The service recorded an average of 5.9 million visits per day in 2021. With an average of 7.28 million visits per day, February 2022 was the strongest month in ZDFmediathek’s history.

The number of views of VoD and live streams increased by 42% in 2021 compared with 2020. Fiction was the most popular genre, followed by information and entertainment.

ZDF director general Norbert Himmler said: “We are continuously working on the further development of the ZDFmediathek.

“The offer has been expanded and the user experience further optimised – for example, with the Highlight Player, through which viewers can enter ongoing sporting events with a time delay and watch goals or other important events directly.

“We are working hard to further expand ZDFmediathek as a modern streaming platform with new features and content.”

According to ZDF, an important part of the service’s success is personalisation. More than 3.7 million registered users now find personalised lists and elements such as a ‘This might interest you’ offering in the ‘My ZDF’ section.

In addition to ZDF productions, the service also includes programmes from channels ZDFneo and ZDFinfo, as well as partner networks 3sat, Kika, Phoenix and Arte.
