US cablenet FX has ordered a limited mystery series and two spin-offs from its American Story franchise, while renewing mockumentary comedy horror show What We Do in the Shadows for a fourth season.
The limited mystery series is called Retreat and follows an amateur sleuth as she attempts to solve a murder at a secluded retreat, to which she and 11 other guests are invited by a reclusive billionaire.
The series is written, directed and exec produced by Brit Marling and Zai Batmanglij, with Marling also starring in a key role. FX Productions is producing.
The latest additions to the American Story franchise, meanwhile, are American Sports Story and American Love Story.
The American Story banner launched in 2011 with American Horror Story, an anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk that tells fictional horror, supernatural and thriller stories, some of which are loosely inspired by true events.
The first spin-off from the series came in 2016 with American Crime Story, a true crime anthology show for which Murphy and Falchuk partnered with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, which was followed by episodic anthology spin-off American Horror Stories last month.
Murphy, Falchuk, Jacobson and Simpson have also teamed up for scripted anthology spin-offs American Sports Story, which focuses on a prominent event involving a real-life sports figure, and American Love Story, which depicts true love stories that captured the world’s attention.
FX is also in development on the fourth season of American Crime Story, which tells the saga and downfall of Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager’s world-famous Manhattan nightclub Studio 54, in addition to a second season of American Horror Stories.
All series in the American Story franchise are produced by 20th Television and FX Productions.
Meanwhile, comedy horror mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows will return for a fourth season next year. Based on the feature film of the same name from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the series documents the nightly exploits of vampire roommates as they navigate the modern world of Staten Island.
Season three of What We Do in the Shadows will premiere on FX next month.
