FX doc bids Welcome to Wrexham

US cablenet FX has commissioned a documentary series about Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ purchase and stewardship of Welsh football club Wrexham.

Eyebrows were raised last year when the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Deadpool stars purchased Wrexham, who play in the fifth tier of English football.

The two-season order will document the next phase of the plan to transform one of the oldest football clubs in the world.

The docuseries will also focus on the people of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, as two Hollywood stars take ownership of the town’s historic yet struggling club despite having no prior experience in the sport or of working with each other.

The announcement was made by Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX Entertainment.

Welcome to Wrexham will be executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Nick Frenkel, John Henion and Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Jordan Wynn and Sarina Roma from the series’ producer Boardwalk Pictures.

Rob McElhenney is the creator, executive producer and star of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
