Foxtel bags Netflix’s Orange

Australian broadcaster Foxtel has picked up its second Netflix-originated series after agreeing a deal for prison comedy Orange is the New Black.

Foxtel’s Showcase channel will start airing the first 13-part season from October 9 at 20.30, following its debut on video-on-demand service Netflix in the US in July.

The pick-up comes after The Comedy Channel’s deal for Netflix show Arrested Development. The Foxtel-owned channel acquired the revived show via a deal with 20th Century Fox, which owns the rights.

Orange is the New Black, produced by Lionsgate Television, has been adapted by Jenji Kohan from Piper Kerman’s book of the same title. A second season has already been greenlit by Netflix, slated for release in 2014.

The first season launched on July 11 on Netflix, but the service is not yet available in Australia.
