US broadcaster Fox has greenlit a new survival competition format The Snake, a wholly-owned series from 495 Productions, with Australian comedian Jim Jefferies set to host.

Billed as a “social survival of the fittest” series, The Snake features 15 contestants compete in strategic challenges for the chance to take on the titular role, granting them control over an explosive elimination twist dubbed The Saving Ceremony.

The series is set to debut on Fox this summer, with episodes streaming the following day on Hulu.

SallyAnn Salsano (Jersey Shore, Joe Millionaire) serves as showrunner and exec produces alongside Frank Miccolis and Kim Green.

The format continues Fox’s push into owned IP as it continues to build out its unscripted slate in-house.

Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network, called the format a “fresh take on the strategy competition genre.”
