Firefly hires Snell, Lemos for UK office, eyes international coproductions

Serbian prodco Firefly International has expanded into the UK with a London office, helmed by two industry veterans, and has announced two programme sales deals in the US and Australia.

Kate Snell

Fresh from winning three awards at the Sarajevo Film Festival last week, Firefly has confirmed it has established a London office and appointed author and filmmaker Kate Snell as creative director and Andreas Lemos as head of global co-financing and distribution.

Snell’s credits include the books Diana: Her Last Love (2000) and Deceived (2007). She also produced and directed feature-length documentary The Spy Who Stole My Life and several other docs via her prodco Creative Touch Films.

Lemos, meanwhile, previously spent nine years at Banijay Rights, most recently as commercial director for factual, and has also had stints at Rocket Distribution and as a buyer at Virgin Media, Babelgum, Biography Channel and History Channel.

The expansion into London comes as Firefly works on a slate of English language coproductions, as C21 reported in 2019. These include an adaptation of 2014 Serbian-language Second World War novel Constantine’s Crossing by Dejan Stojiljkovic. Shooting is scheduled for Autumn 2022.

Other English-language drama copros in the works at Firefly include espionage franchise The Margo Lane Trilogy, based on the bestselling thrillers by former BBC Hard Talk host Tim Sebastian, as well as 10-part airport thriller Rabies and eight-part French political drama Gorilla.

Also on the Firefly production slate are 10×60’ contemporary supernatural horror thriller series Black Wedding, which has just been re-commissioned by Telecom Serbia’s Superstar Channel for a second 10×60’ series ahead of its October premiere.

Children of Evil (10×60’), meanwhile, is based on a bestselling murder mystery novel written by Miodrag Majic. It evolves around a troubled attorney as he tries to solve a murder of a well-known politician.

Other titles on the slate include teen thriller Block 27, family crime drama Tycoon, and The Family, a drama looking at Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic’s last three days in power. The Family has been licensed to SBS Australia and MHz Networks in the US.

Belgrade-based Firefly was launched in 2018 by former BBC news producer Ivana Miković in partnership with other producers from Serbia. It has a deal with Serbian telco and cable TV company Telekom Srbija for a number of dramas series. Miković previously worked at RTS, Fox TV in Serbia and Antenna Group, and also ran the B92 channel.

“We are thrilled to be bringing such a strong and diverse range of both finished scripted projects and compelling coproduction IP to the market and can’t wait to expand on Firefly International’s initial successes,” said Snell and Lemos in a joint statement.
