Firebird options Nikki May novel Wahala

BBC Studios-backed UK prodco Firebird Pictures has optioned Nikki May’s debut novel Wahala for adaptation.

Elizabeth Kilgarriff

Wahala tells the story of three British Nigerian women in their 30s living in London and trying to get their lives in order. When a charismatic new friend arrives on the scene, tensions increase to breaking point.

Firebird was founded in 2019 by former BBC commissioning editor Elizabeth Kilgarriff, who commissioned dramas including Bodyguard and Luther and is now CEO of Firebird.

In August 2019, the prodco signed a deal to adapt Allie Reynolds’ thriller novel Shiver as a series.

BBC Studios distributes all of Firebird’s content as part of its minority stake agreement and is expected to do the same with Wahala.

Kilgarriff said: “Being entrusted by Nikki to bring the wonderful Wahala to screen is a huge privilege. Putting female friendship under the spotlight and featuring real, funny and refreshingly imperfect women, Nikki has created a story that is both utterly relatable and fantastically epic – everything you could want to make standout, thrilling and entertaining drama with plenty to say about our lives today.”
