In 2023, children and young teens in the UK spent an average of around 125 minutes per day on online gaming platform Roblox on their mobile devices – almost double the amount of time they spent on the platform in 2019, according to research firm Statista.

What’s striking for those in TV is that this demographic spent just 38 minutes each day tuned into broadcast television last year, down from just over an hour per day five years ago.

Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft and other online social gaming services are having a seismic impact on children’s media consumption and the TV industry is scrambling to keep up with these changing habits as they try to hang on to dwindling audiences.

Julian Scott, animation consultant for funding body Film London, and Maggie Liang, MD of UK-China distributor The Media Pioneers, spoke with Karolina Kaminska at Cartoon Forum earlier this month about the challenges for the TV industry and production companies in entering this space.
