Federation raises $18m investment

French indie Federation Entertainment has raised €16m (US$18.4m) in minority investment to help the firm grow its presence domestically and internationally.

In a funding round led by French bank Bpifrance Investment, Federation secured investment from local firms BNP Paribas Développement, Amundi Private Equity Funds, Alliance Entreprendre and Entrepreneur Venture.

The funding will support new projects and “external growth initiatives,” the company said.

The Paris-headquartered firm, which also has a base in Los Angeles, has been growing steadily through production and distribution since it was set up five years ago.

It has produced series The Collection (in collaboration with organisations including the BBC), The Bureau and SVoD giant Netflix’s political drama Marseille. Netflix has recently commissioned horror thriller Marianne from the company, to be coproduced with Empreinte Digitale.

The investment boost comes days after the company acquired a majority stake in unscripted specialist WeMake, which Federation helped launch last year.

Federation also struck a deal earlier this year with European film and TV outfit Anton to grow its production and distribution operations, which will see Anton co-fund distribution acquisitions in drama and animation.

“After having put in place a number of innovative financing tools for production and distribution, notably with Anton Capital, we are taking a new step to strengthen the Federation’s capacity for long-term development,” said Pascal Breton, CEO and majority shareholder of Federation Entertainment.

“The objective is to support the organic growth of our investments in production and distribution while expanding our international presence, notably through acquisitions, in order to become one of the leading European studios, with a very active branch in the US.”
