EzyFlix TV, Stan in pricing war

Australian VoD service EzyFlix TV has slashed the price of downloading the full season of Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul in a direct challenge to rival streamer Stan.

Sunday’s premiere of Better Call Saul on US cablenet AMC was seen by 6.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen, with AMC claiming it was the biggest series premiere in US cable history.

In Australia, the show was made available to stream on Stan – the joint venture OTT service owned by Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media – the same day it aired in the US, costing Aussie subscribers A$10 a month.

But rival streamer EzyFlix TV is now claiming its offer – a season pass for the programme at A$10 for all 10 episodes over a two-week period – undercuts Stan.

“To watch the same content on Nine Entertainment and Fairfax’s new joint venture, Stan, would cost A$30 and take the same amount of time, given it’s likely to be shown over 10 weeks,” said Craig White, CEO of Access Digital Entertainment, the company behind EzyFlix TV.

“We’re standing up to Stan and providing customers with a more appealing offer.”

White said that while the recently launched SVoD services are good news for consumers and are raising awareness of video-on-demand, EzyFlix TV was the most differentiated.

The move is the latest in an arms race in the Australian SVoD market, as Netflix gets set to launch in Australia and New Zealand next month, and has already forced pay TV outfit Foxtel to slash the cost of its service.
