eOne catches YouTube cat

Entertainment One (eOne) has acquired international distribution rights to animated YouTube phenomenon Simon’s Cat, which has clocked up a total of 358 million views since 2008.

The UK toon is produced by its creator Mike Bell and follows the mischievous antics of a fat white cat and his owner.

It is eOne’s first foray into digital brand management and gives the company worldwide distribution rights to the property across all media, including television, home entertainment, licensing and online.

Zodiak Rights was the previous licensing agent for the online animated show.

eOne handles home entertainment and digital sales of kids’ properties such as Peppa Pig, Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom and Rob the Robot through its Family arm.

“Online content is being consumed by audiences around the world like never before, thus creating a unique sort of brand awareness that we’re eager to harness,” said Olivier Dumont, MD of eOne Licensing and eOne Family.

“Over five years, Simon’s Cat has grown its licensing and publishing success by continuing to develop its roots in the digital space, and as such we’re fortunate to have a rapidly expanding international audience,” said Bell.
