Endemol Shine NA eyes drama inspired by MasterChef judge Aarón Sánchez

Endemol Shine North America (ESNA) is exploring the idea of creating scripted programming based on the life of restaurateur, chef and MasterChef judge Aarón Sánchez.

Aarón Sánchez

ESNA, the producer behind Fox Entertainment’s MasterChef and MasterChef Junior, has optioned the rights to Sanchez’s memoir Where I Come From: Life Lessons From a Latino Chef.

The company said it is currently looking at ways to turn the memoir into a scripted series, with execs Flavio Morales, Lisa Fahrenholt and Sharon Levy spearheading development efforts.

The memoir tells the story of Sanchez’s upbringing and rise to fame in the culinary world, as well as the story of his mother, Zarela Martinez, who moved Sanchez and his twin brother from El Paso, Texas to New York as she pursued her own dream of owning a restaurant.

Aside from appearing as a judge on MasterChef and MasterChef Junior, Sanchez has also appeared in culinary series including Chopped, Chopped Junior, Taco Trip and Spanish-language cooking shows 3 Minutos con Aarón and Motochefs.

On the scripted side of its business, ESNA, which is part of Banijay Americas, is in production on the Showtime drama Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling Tom Ripley novels. ESNA also recently coproduced Utopia, written and produced by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects), for Amazon Prime Video.
