Hearst Networks, Sky, Nutopia drama-doc investigates newspaper frenzy around Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper: Written in Blood will air on Sky History in April

Hearst Networks EMEA and European pay TV broadcaster Sky are partnering on a new documentary series about Jack the Ripper produced by Jane Root’s prodco Nutopia.

Jack the Ripper: Written in Blood will air on Sky History in April, looking at how a series of murders in the London borough of Whitechapel fuelled the rise of tabloid journalism in the UK.

The three-part drama-documentary shines a light on one Fleet Street newspaper in particular, The Star, and its shameless exploitation of the killings to boost circulation and profits, while hindering the police investigation to further its own agenda.

Dan Korn, VP of programming at Hearst Networks EMEA, and Hayley Reynolds, director of documentaries and factual at Sky, commissioned the series. Korn and Kathryn Taylor are the executive producers on behalf of Sky History and Ben Goold and Jane Root exec produce for Nutopia.

Tom Stubberfield serves as the series showrunner and Tracey Larcombe is the series drama director. Blue Ant Studios will handle international distribution rights, excluding the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man.

The series is filmed on location in Bucharest and London.
