Disney+ to integrate Atresplayer content in landmark Spanish-language deal

José Antonio Antón, director general of Atresmedia Audiovisual, and Simon Amselem CEO of The Walt Disney Company in Spain and Portugal

Disney+ is integrating Atresplayer content into its catalogue in Spain and is launching a specially curated collection of Atresmedia titles through the Atresplayer label from this month.

The agreement includes more than 300 hours of content produced in Spain by Atresmedia annually, and this will be updated regularly in a dedicated Atresplayer space within Disney+.

“Atresmedia offers excellent local content, including some of the best productions in the country. Adding hundreds of hours of this content to stream on Disney+ is great news for our customers in Spain,” said Karl Holmes, general manager of Disney+ for EMEA.

The agreement with Atresplayer follows similar agreements announced in the UK with ITVX and in Germany with ZDF.

It also fits into the growing trend of collaboration between European streaming platforms and broadcasters, such as the one announced by Netflix and TF1 in France.

“This pioneering and unprecedented agreement with Disney+, one of the largest international streaming platforms, consolidates the leadership of Atresmedia and Atresplayer, reaffirming the success of their innovative content exploitation strategy. It allows us to expand the reach of our productions, promoting Spanish talent and culture. Disney and Atresmedia share the quality and ambition of their content, as well as the care they take with their brands. It was only natural that we would meet,” said Javier Bardají, CEO of Atresmedia.

According to details, the agreement grants Disney+ co-exclusive rights to a wide range of Atresmedia productions.

Among the first titles coming to Disney+ are Mar Fuera (premiering on September 14), entertainment shows like La Voz and Tu Cara Me Sonido, Antena 3 series like La Encrucijada and Sueños de Libertad, and classics such as Vis a Vis, Física o Química and Aquí No Hay Quien Viva.
