Disney+ renews X-Men, Spider-Man animated series ahead of debuts

I Am Groot focuses on the Guardians of the Galaxy character

Disney+ has ordered second seasons of upcoming X-Men and Spider-Man animated series from Marvel Studios ahead of their debuts on the streaming service.

X-Men ’97, which explores new stories in the 1990s timeline of the original X-Men animated series, will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ next autumn.

Beau DeMayo, executive producer and head writer on the show, announced the renewal at Comic-Con in San Diego alongside execs including Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ head of streaming television and animation.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which is due in 2024, has also been renewed for a second season, which will be titled Spider-Man: Sophomore Year.

The series follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. Executive producer Jeff Trammel is the head writer.

Disney+ has also renewed What If…?, the animated series that questions, revisits and twists classic moments in the MCU, for a third season. The show’s second season is set to launch exclusively on Disney+ in early 2023.

During the presentation, Bryan Andrews and AC Bradley held a surprise screening of one episode of the second season.

Other upcoming Marvel Studios titles heading to Disney+ that were discussed at Comic-Con include I Am Groot, which launches exclusively on Disney+ on August 10, and Marvel Zombies.
