Disney+ pulls the plug on UK original superhero comedy Extraordinary and period drama Shardlake

Shardlake has been pulled after just four episodes

Streamer Disney+ has axed two UK Original series, superhero comedy Extraordinary and mystery period drama Shardlake.

Execs from the platform didn’t give a reason for the cancellations, with Shardlake being pulled after just four episodes and Extraordinary cancelled following two seasons.

Created by Irish writer Emma Moran and produced by BBC Studios-owned Sid Gentle Films (Killing Eve), Extraordinary debuted on the service in January of 2025. It starred Máiréad Tyers as an ordinary costume shop worker living in a world where almost everyone else has superpowers.

Shardlake, meanwhile, was based on the Shardlake series of historical mystery novels by C.J. Sansom set in the reign of Henry VIII in the 16th century. Produced by Banijay-owned scripted outfit The Forge (Help) and Runaway Fridge, it starred Arthur Hughes and Sean Bean and premiered in summer 2024.

Last year, Disney+ pulled the plug on Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright’s highwaywoman fantasy show Renegade Nell, produced by Lookout Point TV. Reports suggested that the much-hyped project did not meet the commercial threshold required for a second season renewal.

More recently, however, the platform has had better luck with UK original Rivals, based on Jilly Cooper’s racy novel, with a second series already in production.
