Wedding Season will be produced by Fremantle-backed Dancing Ledge Productions in the UK and is described as a “genre-busting escapist romance” about two people who shouldn’t be together but can’t stay away from one another.

Production will begin in autumn on the eight-episode series, which will be branded as a Star original for Disney+.

It joins the 14 previously announced European projects on the streaming service as part of Disney’s ambition to commission 50 productions in Europe by 2024.

So far, the Disney+/Star originals have been drawn from the UK, Italy, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Chris Carey (Les Misérables), Laurence Bowen (The Eichmann Show) and Toby Bruce (The Salisbury Poisonings) will exec produce Wedding Season for Dancing Ledge. The show is being produced in association with Jax Media (Russian Doll), for which Lilly Burns, Brooke Posch and Tony Hernandez also exec produce.

Written by screenwriter Oliver Lyttelton (Cheaters), also an exec producer, it will be directed by George Kane (Timewasters).

The series follows a bride who viewers first meet on her wedding day surrounded by the dead bodies of her new husband and every member of his family, and no one knows who killed them.

Johanna Devereaux, director of scripted content in EMEA at The Walt Disney Company, said: “When we first read Oli’s brilliant scripts for Wedding Season, we laughed out loud and we were desperate to find out what happened next. It’s an addictive, genre-defying series packed with twists and turns.”

Carey, executive producer at Dancing Ledge Productions, added: “Dancing Ledge is dedicated to nurturing new talent and, having started working with Oli early on in his career, we are delighted to now be teaming up with Disney and our producing partners Jax Media to bring his playful, big-hearted and wickedly funny Wedding Season scripts to the screen.”
