Disney hatches cartoon chicken

Disney Junior will broadcast the preschool animated revamp of a 48-year-old Italian-Japanese chicken character.

Calimero (104×11′) follows a loving but hapless chicken that was first seen on Italian TV screens in a series of 1960s advertisements.

Japan’s Toei Animation later licensed the franchise, producing series in 1974 and 1992 that were said to have aired in 79 territories.

The new CGI version, from French animation studio Gaumont-Alphanim, has already been picked up by Rai TV in Italy and TF1 in France. Disney Junior will air the series across its channels in EMEA.

Gaumont-Alphanim also acquired 130 existing Calimero half-hours, plus an additional 290 episodes for international distribution, as part of last year’s deal with Calimero creators the Pagot family and Calidra.
