Disney+ confirms Inside Out spin-off series Dream Productions for 2025

Dream Productions is based on Disney hit Inside Out

Disney has confirmed a four-episode series based in the world of hit Pixar movie franchise Inside Out will launch on its streaming service next year.

Written and directed by Mike Jones and produced by Jaclyn Simon, Dream Productions comes after Inside Out 2 recently became the number one animated film of all time.

Pixar Animation Studios chief creative officer Pete Docter discussed the project at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California.

The event sees thousands of fans gather to hear the announcements and plans for Disney Live Action, Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios in the years ahead.

Dream Productions will step inside main character Riley’s mind as she creates her dreams while she sleeps, led by the ‘dream director’ voiced by Paula Pell.

The series will also feature the voices of Richard Ayoade, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Alli Maki, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black and Phyllis Smith.

It comes as Disney+ gears up to launch Pixar’s first original series, Win or Lose, on the streamer on December 6, having initially planned to release it in 2023.

It follows a co-ed middle school softball team in the week leading up to their championship game. Each episode takes place that same week, highlighting the perspective of a different main character – players, their parents, the umpire – each reflected in a unique visual style.

Win or Lose is directed, written and executive produced by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates and produced by David Lally.

Since announcing a bumper series slate in 2022, the Mouse House has significantly rode back on spending on animated series after a strategic shift last year that resulted in job cuts at the likes of Pixar.

Many of the axed positions were those working on Disney+ originals after Pixar wrapped production titles such as Win or Lose.

Nevertheless, Disney is still spending and announced plans last week to put up least US$5bn on blockbuster movies and TV series in the UK and continental Europe over the next five years, according to its EMEA president Jan Koeppen.

Meanwhile, this year’s D23 also saw star Jude Law hit the stage to offer insight on the forthcoming Star Wars coming-of-age series launching on Disney+ on December 3, Skeleton Crew.

Told through the perspective of four kids, the series follows them as they make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy.

Other Star Wars projects heading to Disney+ include season two of Andor, while Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige discussed next month’s launch of Marvel Television’s new series Agatha All Along, starring Kathryn Hahn.

Launching on Disney+ in March 2025, meanwhile, is Marvel Television’s Daredevil: Born Again, which catches up with the blind lawyer with heightened abilities.

Fans also welcomed Ryan Coogler and his team at Proximity, who are producing the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart with Marvel Television.

Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Marvel Television’s Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world, returns to her hometown of Chicago.

Meanwhile, Disney Branded Television and 20th Television are in production in Vancouver on season two of Percy Jackson & the Olympians, which will debut in 2025.

National Geographic also revealed a first look at upcoming series David Blaine: Do Not Attempt, coming to National Geographic and Disney+ next year.
