CONTENT STRATEGIES: Uncovering programming opportunities worldwide

Discovery preps Euro 2012 doc

Discovery Networks CEEMEA has greenlit its second original production, providing behind-the-scenes access to preparations for this summer’s European Football Championships.

Euro 2012 is being held this summer in Poland and Ukraine with 16 nations from across Europe competing.

Discovery Networks Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa has commissioned Polish prodco Slodkowski Holdings to make Engineering the European Championships (2×60′) to examine the preparations being made for the event.

It is the second original commission from CEEMEA following Ultimate Cops that was greenlit earlier this year.

The programme will premiere in May in 105 markets across CEEMEA, and also in Western Europe and Asia Pacific as the first Discovery CEEMEA commission to travel outside the region. Shorts taken from the series will air on Discovery during the tournament in June.

Paul Welling (above), senior VP, head of channels for Discovery Networks CEEMEA, told C21: “The strategy for CEEMEA is to exploit the US content and to add to that locally relevant content.

“Clearly the younger male audience that we target will be interested by this summer of sport. The amazing access the producers have confirmed in Poland and Ukraine is perfect for us in two of our biggest markets.”

The programme’s producer Andrzej Slodkowski, from prodco Slodkowski Holdings, said: “We had good access but I wanted to see absolutely everything. The engineering of the stadiums, the security, I wanted to understand how the facilities will work.”
