DirecTV ready for doc season

US satellite platform DirecTV will screen a 12-part series of documentaries on social issues from the end of October on its Audience Network channel.

Audience Network, previously better known for drama such as Friday Night Lights, is partnering with Brainstorm Media on the Something to Talk About factual series.

The season will include 12 thought provoking documentaries and will begin on Saturday October 20 at 21.00 with Battle for Brooklyn and Big Boys Gone Bananas on Saturday December 1.

Battle for Brooklyn from directors Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley meets the residents who are losing their homes to make way for the Atlantic Yards project which will include 16 sky scrapers and a basketball arena in the heart of Brooklyn.

Big Boys Gone Bananas is about a legal battle between Swedish filmmaker Fredrik Gertten and the Dole Food Company over a film he made focusing on a lawsuit 12 Nicaraguan plantation workers successfully brought against the firm.

Each film will conclude with a filmmaker interview bringing the issues discussed in the film up to date.
