Dating show wins Horsepower 3.0

A millennial dating show has been crowned the winner of the third edition of Canadian producer-distributor MediaRanch’s Horsepower formats development initiative, which looks to promote grassroots production in Quebec.

The winning format comes from Alexandra Paquin, a film student at Montreal’s Concordia University.

French commercial broadcaster and Horsepower partner TF1 and Canadian distributor Quebecor Content will provide funds to develop the format for TV, while Media Ranch will handle production and distribution.

Horsepower was founded by Media Ranch and Quebecor Content in 2018, with TF1 and formats experts La Fabrique Des Formats joining this year. TF1 VP of content development Julien Degroote and Quebecor VP of acquisitions Christine Maestracci joined the panel for the latest edition.

The winning Horsepower 2.0 format – Isabelle Laperrière’s dating show Heartbreak Hotel – was acquired by South Korea’s SBS FormatEast last year.

Degroote said: “One cannot but be more impressed by the calibre and unmistakable universality of many of the formats submitted, and we see tremendous potential for the future. We unreservedly share the vision of our partners in Quebec in this regard.”

Media Ranch content and storytelling head Philip Kalin-Hajdu added: “Media Ranch continues to be amazed at the calibre of the untapped emerging talent that is out there. Horsepower, even after three editions, continues to be an enriching experience and proves to be a true incubator of original and viable formats. Media Ranch looks forward to producing an international version of Horsepower in the near future to mine format talent on a massive global scale.”
