Western thriller Dark Winds breezes through to third season at AMC, AMC+

Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito and Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn in Dark Winds

US cablenet AMC and streamer AMC+ have ordered a third season of the western thriller Dark Winds, produced by the company’s in-house production unit AMC Studios.

The renewal comes after the six-part second season concluded earlier this month. The third instalment is tentatively targeted to premiere in early 2025.

Based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee book series, the show follows two policemen in the south-west of America in the 1970s. It stars Zahn McClarnon (The Son, Westworld), Kiowa Gordon (The Red Road, Roswell, New Mexico) and Jessica Matten (Tribal, Burden of Truth).

The renewal comes after Dark Winds was made available to subscribers of Warner Bros Discovery-owned streamer Max in the US through a two-month licensing deal.

The series was created for television by Graham Roland (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Returned), with John Wirth (Hell of Wheels, Hap and Leonard) serving as showrunner. Executive producers are Roland, Wirth, McClarnon, Robert Redford, George RR Martin, Anne Hillerman, Chris Eyre, Vince Gerardis and Tina Elmo.
