Johnson-Bekoe will take up the newly created position immediately, reporting to CEO Derren Lawford, to grow the label’s drama and film projects with an emphasis on the US and African markets, whilst developing relationships with creative talent.

With experience in writing, producing and script editing, Johnson-Bekoe was previously senior development executive at 59%. Prior to that, she worked in scripted development, with credits on projects such as season two of Ted Lasso for Apple+ and Riches for ITVX.

“Cassandra has already secured unique access to some incredibly powerful and distinctive stories for Dare, which we’re really excited to see develop over the coming months,” said Lawford, who founded Dare Pictures in 2022.

Johnson-Bekoe has also co-founded two collectives. The first, Black Women in Scripted, has more than 300 members while the second, The Colab, is a diverse network for industry professionals.

Its commissions since launching include Crypto Queen, an unscripted copro with Tondowski Films, Channel 4, Sky Germany and Fremantle directed by Rudolph Herzog, and Dalton’s Dream, a feature documentary for BBC Storyville directed by Kim Longinotto and Franky Murray Brown, backed by the BFI’s Global Screen Fund and distributed by Dogwoof.

“I’m truly looking forward to this next chapter at Dare Pictures,” she said. “Through my entrepreneurship and true passion for scripted, we are going to create subversive and revolutionary content.”
