Danger Mouse back in action

UK children’s broadcaster CBBC has ordered a remake of classic animated series Danger Mouse, more than 30 years after it first aired.

The new 52×11’ cartoon, from RTL-owned FremantleMedia, is due to broadcast on CBBC in 2015.

The original Cosgrove Hall Films production ran for 10 series from 1981 to 1992 on CiTV in the UK and Nickelodeon in the US.

The show, which follows a fearless rodent secret agent and his sidekick, is the latest iconic kids’ series to be revived in the UK following commissions of The Wombles by Channel 5, Teletubbies by the BBC, Thunderbirds by ITV and a Cartoon Network revival of The Powerpuff Girls.

The rights to the Danger Mouse character are owned by FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment, which is collaborating with the BBC on the new series.

The reboot will be produced in association with Irish indie Boulder Media, directed by Robert Cullen (The Amazing World of Gumball) and penned by Ben Ward (Horrible Histories). The original show’s co-creator Brian Cosgrove will consult on the project.

CBBC’s Sarah Muller and FremantleMedia’s Bob Higgins will exec produce the series, which was commissioned by CBBC controller Cheryl Taylor.

Danger Mouse was created in 1981 by Cosgrove and Mark Hall and produced by Cosgrove Hall for Thames Television.
