It is based on the DC comic of the same name that was first published in 2019 and co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F Walker and illustrated by Jamal Campbell,

DuVernay has written and exec produced Naomi alongside Jill Blankenship (Arrow), with Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes serving as exec producers. Amanda Marsalis directed and co-executive produced the pilot episode.

The two series join The 4400, a reboot of the 2004 USA Network drama, which was given a straight-to-series order in February.
