Composition Media strikes deal to adapt African-centric Black Sands comic

Black Sands: The Seven Kingdoms

US animation studio Composition Media is to collaborate with comic book publisher Black Sands Entertainment on an anime cartoon adaptation of the comic Black Sands: The Seven Kingdoms.

Missouri-based Composition Media was founded last year by Carl Reed, one of the producers of Oscar-winning short Hair Love and co-founder of Lion Forge Entertainment.

The prodco champions projects with global appeal which highlight minority and underrepresented communities. Similarly, Black Sands Entertainment is a black-owned company that publishes content catering to black families.

Black Sands: The Seven Kingdoms is a project which aims to celebrate African culture and empower black youth, telling the story of a young boy called Auser. He journeys to distant lands in the ancient world in a quest to rule Kemet.

“This venture extends beyond mere entertainment,” said Reed. “It’s about affirming identity and igniting ambition in a generation that rightfully deserves to see themselves portrayed heroically on screen.”

Manuel Godoy, CEO of Black Sands Entertainment, said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Carl Reed to help us reach a much larger audience and bring our Black Sands comic books to life through anime.”

The two companies hope the multi-million-dollar production deal will be the first of several collaborations in the future.

Composition Media is also developing 2D animated adult comedy Bad Grandmas, as well as Catapult Feud, a TV series based on the board game of the same name.
