Comedy Central ads dash more Onion

US cable network Comedy Central has ordered a 10-part series from satirical web news organisation The Onion, on the back of a half-hour pilot produced earlier this year.

The commission is The Onion’s second in less than a month, with its Onion News Network strand set to become a series on another US cablenet, IFC.

This second commission, a scripted show provisionally titled The Onion Sports Network (10×30′), is based on the web video strand of the same name and will debut on Comedy Central in the first quarter of 2011. The MTV Networks-owned network will also air the pilot, which C21 first reported on in November.

The series will feature the website’s usual mix of fake news, ridiculous reports and over-hyped coverage, recreating the glossy and expensive look of the online video strands.

It will be executive produced by Onion News Network producer Julie Smith and Will Graham, the duo that handled the pilot. Lisa Leingang executive produces for Comedy Central.
